Problem
Most API solutions on the market are complex and require coding knowledge, making them inaccessible to non-developers. This creates a significant barrier for those who need to use APIs but lack the technical skills. Blend Metrics wanted to create a solution that would simplify this process, allowing users with no coding experience to easily build and manage APIs through an intuitive platform.
Solution
We developed the Blend Metrics SaaS API Builder, a platform designed for users with no coding knowledge. The focus was on creating a simple, visual interface where users could build APIs through drag-and-drop features and guided workflows. This user-friendly approach makes API creation accessible to everyone, streamlining the process and eliminating the need for technical expertise.

My Design Process
My design process involved continuous iteration, starting with user research, followed by wireframes, prototypes, and optimization, with constant refining and redesigning to achieve the final design.
User Research
In our research, we discovered that many of our competitors offered highly technical API builders that were difficult for non-technical users to navigate. Some no/low-code API builders lacked the customization and flexibility that our target audience requires. We relied on competitor audits and our team’s expertise to develop a user-friendly drag-and-drop interface for our API integration builder. It empowers teams to create custom integrations without writing code, reducing costs while still offering the flexibility and control needed to serve customers.
Personas
Competitive Audit & Analysis
To guide the design of our platform, we conducted a comprehensive competitor analysis, breaking down companies into four categories: best in class, out of category, API competitors, and marketing automation tools. We studied best-in-class companies to understand what made them successful and aimed to incorporate those elements into our platform. Out-of-category products, like workflow and chatbot builders, provided inspiration for specific features we wanted to include. For API competitors, we examined their products, even though ours was unique in offering a no-code solution, to ensure we created a user-friendly experience that still held up against them. Lastly, we looked at marketing automation tools to learn from their drag-and-drop campaign builders, which influenced our own drag-and-drop workflow builder. This holistic approach helped us create a well-rounded and competitive platform.

To better the design we went back and did further research and used the feedback from stakeholders to add more features to the design.
Results
Although the Blend Metrics SaaS API Builder platform hasn’t been released to the public yet, our usability tests yielded promising results. Users found the platform intuitive and easy to navigate, even without prior experience with APIs or coding. The feedback from stakeholders has been positive, indicating confidence in the platform’s potential and alignment with the project’s goals.
Final Thoughts
The development of the Blend Metrics platform has been a collaborative and iterative process, focused on creating an accessible and user-friendly solution in a traditionally complex space. Through comprehensive research, competitor analysis, and rigorous testing, we’ve built a platform that empowers non-coders to harness the power of APIs and workflow builders. As we prepare for the public launch, we remain committed to refining and improving the user experience to ensure the platform’s success.
